Europe, (the british European french etc...) there were black immigrants who wanted to escape the strife and slavery of America and fled to Canada where they received a not so much better welcome.

Before coming up from the now USA, which started very early, Europeans had settled along the Canadian coastline in fishing communities in the early 1500's. They were pretty successful as there was a lot of fish, more than we can imagine today. They would get to their ships by walking on the backs of cod.
