The British did build the roads and railways in India to facilitate easy movement of goods and services in India. They also wanted to open India to the outside world.

Following the rebellion, the British government ended the charter of the British East India Company and took over the management of India, making it a colony. Queen Victoria became the Empress of India. It remained a British colony until 1947. This time period is known as the British Raj.
Well its government was not under a socialist party, but the countries actions were considered socialist by their laws and implementation by improving social standards of the Poor and Middle classes.
