This was King George 1st. Queen Anne died with no surviving children in 1714, and under the Act of Settlement of 1701, no Catholic was permitted to become British monarch. George had previously been the Elector of Hanover, but he was Anne's closest living Protestant relative and thus took the English trhone.

It should be mentioned that he didn't govern Britain alone, but in conjunction with Parliament, which by then had the final word on policy and the power of veto over the King's decisions. This system was what the English Civil War had been fought over in the previous Century.
