According to legend,Christianity reached Britain with the arrival of Joseph Arimathen, said to be the uncle of Jesus,in the first century A.D. He is supposed to have brought with him the cup that was used at the last supper and this was later known as the holy grail, becomming the subject of several quests.Joseph Arimathen is said to have founded a Christian settlement at Glastonbury and to have buried the cup from the last supper there. The holy thorn tree there is said to have grown as a result of Joseph planting his staff in the ground .
