The Spanish inquisition was established in 1478. It was introduced by Isabella I of Castile and the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon. It was to maintain the Catholic orthodoxy in the kingdom and for replacing the Medieval Inquisition that was under the Papal control.

Catholic AnswerThere were a number of different Inquisition over the course of more than a thousand years. Broadly speaking there was the Medieval Inquisition, the Roman Inquisition, and the Spanish Inquisition. Each was run by different authorities for different purposes. The Spanish Inquisition, the best known, as the closest to modern times, and the most advertising, howbeit mostly fantasy, was run by the Spanish government in order to discover Moors (Muslims) and Jews who pretended to convert to Christianity for political purposes and undermine the government. For a more thorough overview see the link below for the article about it at Catholic Answers, or pick up the book Seven Lies About Catholic History by Diane Moczar who devotes an entire chapter to it, along with a list of further resources.
