However, he did not visit the country again after his accession. George V was the first ruling British monarch to visit India. He first visited India as Prince of Wales in 1905. With his wife, Queen Mary, he returned, as king and emperor, to the elaborate coronation ceremony, called a durbar, at Delhi, held on Dec. 12, 1911. George V was the only ruler to attend his own Indian coronation ceremony.
