Ferdinand Magellan was the fist leader of the expedition, but died in the Philippines. The master of the ship when it sailed back into Seville was Juan Sebastián Elcano. It is believed, however, that Magellan's slave Enrique was from the Philippines since he cold speak the local dialect when they arrived there. This would make him the first person to complete a circumnavigation of the world, although only his voyage from Spain to the Philippines was in a Spanish ship.
