Most experts agree that the first non-aboriginal people to visit North America were the Norse (Vikings).

Bjarni Herjólfsson is credited with being the first Eurpoean to see and visit Canada's coast, after sailing from Eirikr Thorvaldsson's (Erik the Red) Greenland settlement.

This was nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas.

No one person has ever explored every part of Canada. Therefore countless numbers of people have each been the first to explore various different parts of Canada. Undoubtedly, it was the people of the First Nations who first explored the various parts of Canada. With respect to European exploration of Canada, it began with Lief Erickson in or around the year 1,000, although there are references to Canada having been sighted prior to that. The next European explorers were Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), Giovanni da Verrazzano, and Jacques Cartier. It is often believed, however, that there were unrecorded explorations, mainly of a trading nature, undertaken by European fishing vessels prior to Cabot.
