To establish power upon Uganda, Amin gathers up a military coup while
the current president Obote is out of the country. While away they accused obote on the radio of his regime corruption, economic mismanagement, and suppressing democracy, and failing to maintain Law and Order.Then declared himself the new president of Uganda. He then made promises of which he said he would eliminate Obote's secret police. Also he said he would free the political prisoners.

Although he was considered a skilled, and somewhat overeager, soldier, Amin developed a reputation for cruelty - he was almost cashiered on several occasions for excessive brutality during interrogations.
