Monrovia California was named after William N. Monroe. The city was established May 17, 1886 and incorporated in 1997. Monrovia was also known as the Gem City of the Foothills.

E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin sold land to Judge J.D. Bicknell, J.F. Crank, E.F. Spence. They combined their land with Monroe and J. F. Falvey (foreman of Baldwin's ranch) and established the town, which they named the town Monrovia in honor of William Monroe.
