People celebrate Christmas to show that they love Jesus. At first Christmas was only a catholic holiday, but then it progressed and now is celebrated by almost everyone! We get gifts on Christmas morning like how Jesus got gifts (from the three kings)

Christians, or people who are eager to get rid of that poverty believe in what they are doing, and will help them in that time of distress, by bringing food and building houses, and just allowing those people into their lives, just to show they care.
Medicine was not terribly good/effective in those times, if they cut themselves on the journey they could get the wound infected that would lead to severe medic problems they could would need money but since the long journey they would run out of money for food. No. A pilgrimage is for anyone. Pilgrims go to special places. Some places are associated with sick people, like Lourdes, but some pilgrimages can be to special places that don't have a particular association with the sick, like Rome or Bethlehem. Even for places like Lourdes, most of the people who go on pilgrimages there are not seriously ill.
