Why do you think that Lord Chancellor was known as the keeper of the king's conscience?

Most people would not be allowed to disagree with the king, since that would be a violation of the king's authority (which was thought to be absolute). However, the Lord Chancellor had sufficient authority that he would be permitted to disagree with the king if he found it necessary to do so. Thus, if the king was acting in an immoral manner, the Chancellor would be in a position to point this out, thus acting as a sort of conscience.
