Slavery was introduced to the English colonies because people were in need of labor to develop the lands. There was a lot of work to be done, and there was little money to pay for labor. The human trade was a solution to the issue. Although, this was not a humane practice.

As settlers in the Chesapeake area focused on cash crops, the need for workers grew. After Bacon's Rebellion, many decided Indentured Servants could prove dangerous and focused more on African slaves. Unlike indentured servants, African slaves were slaves for life. Chesapeake planters moved further towards securing dominion over the slaves with the introduction of slave codes.
