Cannons were not only used to decimate the compacted formations in use during 19th century battles - but also to shatter the morale of those facing a bombardment. In sieges the heavy guns of the attackers were the only way of making an assualt practical - as they were for the defenders the only way of breaking up an attack. The conclusion of artillery is destruction of large bodies of men and the reduction the enemies will to stand.
