Because they were believed to go against the church. For a society that was tied to the church in their everyday life, the scientific world was scary and something to be avoided.

The Velvet Revolution was the peaceful overthrow of the Communist government in Czechoslovakia in 1989, as a part of the wider collapse of the Communist regimes in Europe during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It eventually let to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993; however, the term "Velvet Revolution" (or, "Gentle Revolution", as it is known in Slovakia) specifically refers to the original overthrow of the Communist government, not the subsequent split of the country.

The French Revolution had no direct effect on the United States. A new country, the US had sufficient teething problems organizing and financing their new democracy, and the turmoil in France had no effect. However, after the Revolution, when Napoleon returned to power and fought the English, it gave Jefferson's reconstituted US Navy the opportunity to support the US Marines in the early fight against the Barbary pirates in the Mediteranian.
The original revolutionaries, once they are mostly successful, are now worried about some future revolutionaries starting a different revolution, to redo the society once again. To the original revolutionaries, what they believed in was right. So, what's the need for another revolution, they think. So, they do not want another revolution after their revolution, or a revolution within their revolution. In the chaos of their revolution, they have the incentive and means to wipe out anyone they think differs from their viewpoint. In the same chaos, someone else can wipe out the original revolutionaries, and hijack the revolution. The incentive of money, power, women, and future good life is far too much to resist.
