Broadly speaking there was the Medieval Inquisition, the Roman Inquisition, and the Spanish Inquisition. Each was run by different authorities for different purposes. The Spanish Inquisition, the best known, as the closest to modern times, and the most advertising, howbeit mostly fantasy, was run by the Spanish government in order to discover Moors (Muslims) and Jews who pretended to convert to Christianity for political purposes and undermine the government.
