  2. Republicanism- People vote for their political leaders ( type of popular sovereignty)
  3. Separation of Powers- government functions best when its powers are not concentrated in a single authority but are instead divided among different branches.
  4. Federalism- the distribution of power in a government between a central authority and the constituent units
  5. Checks and Balances- a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power
  6. Limited Government- functions and powers are prescribed, limited, and restricted by law
  7. Individual Rights- Rights such as freedom of speech, assembly, etc. that the government protects.
