There really are no benefits to military rule. While there might be a temporary stability in a country, this is often shattered as the new dictator launches extermination campaigns against their real or supposed opponents (Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Samuel K. Doe, for example). Civil liberties are often suspended, and foreign investment suffers as rule of law is no longer in effect and investment-trade laws become negotiable.
The advantage of martial law is that it grants extraordinary power to some executive (whether the President, general, or whomever is in charge) which enables him to do whatever is necessary to deal with some terrible emergency, without any hindrance from a legal system, a legislature or judiciary. Of course, we have legal systems in place to protect us from abuse by dictatorial or arbitrary rulers, so when martial law is declared, all kinds of abuse may (and often does) result. Martial law does make it easier to deal with an emergency (particularly if it is a really desperate emergency which threatens the survival of the nation in question) but it also comes at a very high cost, and it is often invoked for the wrong reasons.
An advantage to marital law is that law enforcement is nearby in case you have any type of emergency. It may also make some areas safer than they would normally be.

Let's clarify. Martial law exists in all countries of the world, but IS NOT the primary form of criminal justice in use in THE VAST MAJORITY of countries. In America and all of her dependencies and territories under American rule, President Obama can declare martial law at any time he sees fit. In each individual state, governors can declare martial law as they see fit. However, it is almost never instituted. Martial law is a form of criminal justice used during times of dramatic war or disaster. During martial law, all military employees and officers are called up for duty. They replace the local police force and heavily patrol all areas. They may impose curfews or rules requiring people not to travel at all. They can and will kill anyone who refuses to comply with them. Look out your window, my fellow citizen. Do you see uniformed soldiers marching throughout the streets? Nope? Congratulations, you've answered your own question with a little help: while it is possible for martial law to be instituted in the US, it currently is not.
