By the very nature of their description, "folk singers" of any period tended to sing about the issues and hardships of the common people. Many of them were considered 'rebels ' to a degree and took part in protests and things that affected peoples everyday life. Their hard-hitting, realistic and often sad songs were an inspiration to thousands all over the world.
