Reciprocity, which means free trade, between the US and Canada, would help Canada's economy considerably. However, when Canada's mother country, Britain, supported the SOUTH side, the LOSING side to the American Civil War, the Americans (the NORTH side, who won) cancelled reciprocity as revenge on Britain for unofficially supporting the South. With Confederation, Canada would be independent from Britain, and therefore, the Americans could not do things to CANADA as revenge on BRITAIN. :)

How did the change in British trade policies the end of reciprocity encouraged confederation?

The end of reciprocity in British trade policies, particularly the cancellation of the Reciprocity Treaty in 1866, prompted Canadian provinces to seek new economic stability and opportunities. The loss of preferential trade access to the U.S. market underscored the need for a unified economic approach, leading provinces to consider confederation as a means to create a stronger, more cohesive economic entity. This desire for a centralized trade policy and better access to resources and markets catalyzed discussions and ultimately the formation of Canada in 1867. Thus, the change in trade policy highlighted the vulnerabilities of individual provinces and reinforced the case for confederation.

How did the cancellation of the reciprocity treaty lead to confederation?

The cancellation of the Reciprocity Treaty in 1866, which had facilitated trade between Canada and the United States, significantly impacted the Canadian economy. This economic disruption heightened concerns about the viability of the provinces, prompting leaders to seek a more unified approach to trade and governance. As a result, discussions about confederation gained momentum, ultimately leading to the formation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867 to strengthen economic ties and political stability among the provinces. Thus, the treaty's cancellation acted as a catalyst for confederation, driving the provinces toward a collective solution.
