the spanish treated their slaves way better than the english. the spanish saw slaves as property but also as people. they recognized tht freedom was the natural state of man and so slaves were manumitted after certain periods. slaves were cared for their masters and had protection against unfair treatment. they were also even considered as part of the family.

so....they were basically treated....well.
