•The political parties want and do have an influence on the country depending whether they are in power or not. This has a big effect on the country as the public choose who they want from there manifesto.

Only established and nationalised parties stand any real chance of election due to their popularity except for the green party who had 1 member of parliament representing Brighton in the general election which took a lot of time and effort.

Was George Washington a major advocate of opposing factions in government via the Federalists and Republican parties?

No, in fact, he was against political parties. He felt that the political party would rule the elected official instead of the voter. That the party would become more important to the person than the people who elected him. For Washington a person was elected to office to help the "common good" and then to go home. If we look at our political system today I think time has proven Washington correct in his assessment of political parties.

Main functions of the political parties?

The major function of a political party is to nominate, or name, candidates for public office. That is, the parties select candidates and then present them to the voters. Then the parties work to help their candidate to win elections. Parties also inform people, and inspire and activate their interest and participation in public affairs.

Is it true that The national chairman of a political party is a volunteer and handles only the planning of the national conventions?

No, that is not true. There may have been a time when national chairs of political parties were just volunteering their time, but in modern times, campaigns have become big business, and political parties play an important role in getting candidates elected. Candidates need to raise large sums of money to get elected, and while they can rely on wealthy political donors, they also rely on their party leaders to help set the political agenda and get the message out across the country. Thus, chairs of political parties are well paid for what is a very demanding job: today, they do much more than run the conventions, although that is one aspect of their job. They are being paid to make sure the public has a favorable view of both the party and the candidates. This means coordinating the campaign in each state (working with campaign managers, consultants, and strategists), honing the message, and guiding the direction of the campaign. It also means going on TV and radio to defend the candidate on behalf of the political party, and to oversee the political ads that will be used to make the other party and its candidates look bad.
