Opium is simply the sap, or juice of the flower Papaver somniferum. When it is dried, it is rather thick and sticky. There are several chemicals in opium that have psychological/physiological effects. Most prominent are morphine and codeine. The chemicals bind to receptors in the body (brain & G.I. tract) and can cause euphoria, nausea, constipation, sedation and analgesia (ease of pain).
