In a representative form of government, most nations have political parties. Thus, in a General election (that is, the election to chose the government representative), a political party puts forth a member of their party to contest in the election. A political party needs some method for choosing the party member to stand in the General election, and this is what we use Primary elections for.

Like any political party, the views of the members of the Republican party are not monolithic. If someone is critical of a member of a political party, someone who disagrees with that member can simply say. "They don't represent me, they just belong to the same party." This color convention has been widely used in the United States to represent party affiliations on electoral maps.
In the US today, voter surveys are intended to find out how voters feel or believe about particular issues such as who is the candidate they favor to be the next US president. These surveys are conducted by companies that are in the business of taking surveys, newspapers and other news media outlets. Often a political party will ask a private company such as the Gallup Poll to gauge voter opinions on a variety of political issues.

"What do you think are the most pressing political issues today?" "How do you feel about the current political leadership in our country?" "Do you align more with a particular political party or are you more independent in your views?" These questions can help start a conversation about someone's political views without being confrontational.
This dream might be about the current (late 2011) political climate in the U.S. The elephant symbolizes the Republican party, so the dreamer might feel trapped by the group of Republican presidential candidates. Similarly, the elephants might not represent candidates but associates with strong Republican opinions, or perhaps inflexible Republican policies. Alternatively, the elephants in this dream might symbolize some other group with elephant-like characteristics: huge, powerful, and immovable.
