At my old company the minumum was 100 case/hr but you were ridiculed until you quit unless you were hitting in the 130s. At my current company the standard is a dismal 75 case/hr but we never throw on the clock, so it's never enforced. Personally I do about 170 case/hr on the canned goods aisle, which is generally considered the most difficult aisle, but can hit over 300 an hour on easy aisles like juice and detergent. I feel like 120 cases/hr is good enough.

Should a Publix associate be forced to transfer?

Publix employees are not forced to transfer. In most cases, employees are encouraged to transfer to another store according to the needs of the company. For instance, if a grocery stocker is not needed in one store and another store needs that stocker in another store, the person will be encouraged to transfer to the new store. But in no case are you forced to leave the store you hired in. On the other hand, it is to your advantage to transfer. Most transfers are made to further advance the employee's career. There are advantages to being the senior member of the team, and the ROI system does note length of time in the department.

What was a paid apprentice called in the middle ages?

An apprentice by definition was not paid. They were a young person who was learning a trade. They lived with a master craftsman as a member of the household. In exchange for their labor they were given training and supported as a member of the family. In some cases they may have been given a small cash allowance for incidentals, but they were not given a wage. Once an apprentice had finished a number of years of study, often seven, they became a journeyman. A journeyman was paid a wage, and would often take up their own residence, but it was possible that a journeyman might live with his master, or rent space from him. Living space was at a premium in medieval cities, and a journeyman, particularly in a less affluent trade, might find himself renting a chamber or garret, and if the master had such space available it made sense to live close to work.
