In the summer of 1776 a massive British fleet sailed into New York harbor, bearing 25,000 British troops and 10,000 Hessians, who were making their first appearance in the war. Most, but not all of them were from Hesse, one of several small Germanic states where the ruler made most of his money by renting out the young men of his domain as soldiers. These were highly trained professional soldiers, who came with their own officers, and who soon established their reputation for efficiency, and for brutality, as well as for greed when plundering, which was their main source of income.
