There are many ways in which our constitution has been modified informally since its ratification. In practice the executive branch has grown relatively much stronger, the houses have grown relatively weaker, Congress has ceded its authority to coin money to banking interests, and the federal government involves itself with the affairs of individual citizens, all of which are contrary to the written text of the founding compact.

Arguably there are several disadvantages to having a written constitution. It may be harder for future generations to interpret the constitution and determine the original intentions behind what was written down. Furthermore, it might even represent values that are now outdated. Most notably, it can be difficult to overhaul such a constitution once it has been established and had many amendments attached to it.

Creating the constitution was difficult and controversial. Some of the items in the bill of rights were not thought of when the constitution was written. Others were too controversial and there was fear that if they were included in the original the constitution would not have been passed.
