The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister. The original words were:
I Pledge Allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
This was changed and "America" was added a year later.
Then in 1923 the words "my Flag" were changed to "the Flag of the United States."
It was once again changed in 1951 with the addition of "under God."
