The conventions of Greek theater are rather different from the conventions of theater today. For one, all of their dramas were staged in the daytime without the aid of artificial lighting that is used to create different times of day for modern audiences. All of the tragedies also had singing and dancing choruses that played a crucial role between scenes.

Ancient theater refers to plays, productions, and playwrights from the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, circa 8th century B.C.E through the beginning of the Middle Ages. It can also refer to Japanese, Chinese, and other Asian theater cultures, although these are usually in their own division. Productions of this time were usually produced in festivals or as part of rituals.

Modern theater refers to plays, productions, playwrights and troupes from just prior to the industrial revolution through the beginning of the 20th century. Notable playwrights from this period are Henrik Ibsen, Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, and Bertolt Brecht to name only a few.
