Although born in Scotland in 1747 and originally thus a British citizen, he fought on the side of the American colonists. A superb mariner and a self-taught warrior, he first served on the "Alfred" as a lieutenant, then took command of the sloop "Providence" in 1775, followed by the "Ranger" and most famously, the "Bonhomme Richard" in 1779. His major contributions to the revolutionary war effort, in addition to his naval victories, were: 1. bringing the fight to the enemy by attacking the British on the homefront and terrorizing England, causing them to devote war resources to defense and 2. providing much needed morale boosts and Propaganda victories to the American war effort, which in turn influenced the French to aid the Americans. Louis XVI loved Jones, and he was celebrated in Paris after his stunning victory over the "Serapis". It has been said that the Revolutionary War was lost on land and won at sea; John Paul Jones contributed a great deal to this. His overall record of 40 - 0 in naval engagements speaks for itself -- "I have not yet begun to fight."
John Paul Jones, born John Paul in Britain, was outlawed by the British for piracy. He offered his services as a mercenary to the Americans during the American War of Independence. He is considered the Father of the American Navy. His exploits during the revolution, including the famous phrase "I have not yet begun to fight!" while his ship was sinking beneath him, made him an American Hero. His body, returned from Russia, is intered beneath the chapel at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. I always pay my respects when I go there.
In 1778 he carried out an unsuccessful raid on the English port of Whitehaven. His plan was to destroy by fire the many British merchant ships moored in the harbour but his men got drunk and very little actual damage was done. His raid did cause consternation in Britain and resulted in the improvement of British coastal defences that ultimately deterred the French from attempting to invade.
