Erica Jong and Maya Angelou , who both opened our minds in very different ways with their writing. June Carter Cash , who brought the hill music of our English ancestors to us with the Carter Family, then later shaped country music with her husband, Johnny Cash. Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey , women of vastly different backgrounds who showed us what an unrelenting work ethic can accomplish. Mother Elizabeth Ann Seaton and Kateri Tekawitha, women of faith who worked tirelessly for the poor. Women of every faith, color, station in life , who all helped to make this country great. And all the forgotten women who suppoted the great men of this country , from farmers to Presidents. This is just a sample of great American women, with many more to come.

I deliberately left out Margaret Sanger, co-founder of the precursor of Planned Parenthood. She loosed an evil[ abortion ] on this country that worsens daily. I hope God was merciful to her when she died, because she only left alegacy of death behind her. She does not deserve to be on this list.

History is a record of names and deeds, and since Civilization everywhere is male centered, and maleness is considered the right stuff, the essential virtue so to speak, most of its important women have been anonymous. If they had been male, their names would be known. Women whose names are known tend to be famous or infamous depending on whether they have satisfied or outraged male sensibility and expectations.

There are important women whose names have become bywords: Xanthippe, the wife of Socrates, as the perfect shrew; Mata Hari as the spy; Delilah, Jezebel, the list goes on and on. There are many women famous for enacting male roles as warrior maidens and statesmen. But in truth, was Cleopatra or Joan of Arc or Elizabeth a more important person in history than Florence Nightingale or Marie Curie?

Of incalculable importance are the usually anonymous mothers, sisters, teachers, lovers, wives and daughters of the great men and women whose names and deeds are known. We all remember Pericles of Athens, but who remembers Aspasia, his mistress and advisor?
