Im not completely sure WHEN you are talking about but I am assuming you mean during the Age of Discovery in which western society was built, involving the Europeans exploration and mapping of the world, the major of these was of course the Americas. A great number of Europeans colonised the Americas, but mainly the Spanish, British, French and Portuguese, but also to a lesser extent the Dutch and the Russians.

The Age of Exploration began in the 15th century and continued in to the early 17th century. Three factors that drove this exploration were desire to spread their religion, desire for riches and desire to gain power over other countries.
The Columbian Exchange involved the trade of slaves, corn, and horses. The only two countries involved were Europe and Africa. The Americas were still considered colonies.
The countries involved in the Truman Doctrine were the United States, Greece, and Turkey. In a speech to a joint session of Congress on March 12, 1947, President Truman asked for U.S. assistance for Greece and Turkey to forestall communist domination of the two nations.
