The United States declared its independence on July 4, 1776. This was when the 13 colonies cut off all political affiliations with Britain.
Supreme Court Justices do not necessarily have parties because they do not run for a political seat. The criteria for a supreme court justice has to be someone who is familiar with the law such as a former lawyer. If Supreme Court justices ran on a political platform that could complicate the position they hold because many political parties have money or a platform they run on.
The terms, liberal and conservative are used to identify positions on political issues. A liberal politician is going to be in favor of spending on a certain issue and a conservative might have a wait and see attitude toward spending.
Alexander Hamilton was actually the generally acknowledged leader at the height of the Federalist party's power. John Adams however was their presidential candidate in the 1795 election because he had more political seniority outside of party affiliations.
