Spain's primary activity to stop westward expansion was to cut off access to the mouth of the Mississippi River, making the Western area mostly unusable to the USA. With the US purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, Spain was stripped of the ability to cut off the Mississippi River and no longer was able to do anything to prevent the extension of the US frontier.
