It is actually a response made in 1930 to Marlowes poem called The passionate Shepherd to His Love. After reading Marlowes poem, Nash's makes much more sense. In Marlowe's poem, he talks about love in the country living with luxuries, and such. He mentions how often they would sit and watch the sun set on a hill with lambs everywhere. In Nashs literature, In light of the Great Depression, the title is talking about love and life under the government (hence republicans and democrats, although hoover was president at the time). Living in New York City (Central Park reference), the couple live frugally on a small budget( cheap wine, dollar movies, small apartment, brown water, etc..) and stress fills their lives. He responded because he wanted to help show the reality of people living in the thirties.

What cases were involved in the case Gibbons v. Ogden?

The US Supreme Court found in favor of Gibbons, because the Constitution assigns authority to regulate business between the states to Congress under Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 (Interstate Commerce Clause) and specifically prohibits states from charging other states for using their waterways under Article I, Section 9.The Court's ruling nullified a New York state law and voided the Fulton-Livingston contract that required steamboat owners to buy a license allowing them to operate in New York state waters.Case Citation:Gibbons v. Ogden, 22 US 1 (1824)

How did Republicans gain control of the south state governerment during reconstruction?

By disenfranchising white southerners on the grounds that almost all of them had either served in the Confederate military or supported the Rebel government. Most white southerners were Democrats, but they could not vote. The Republicans then ensured that the freedmen - the former slaves - WERE allowed to vote, and out of gratitude for their freedom they voted Republican. The elections where this went on were held under the control of the military occupation, with the US Army enforcing the rules, so that when southern states were readmitted they came back with Republican governments. Most black Americans continued to support the Republican Party until 1936, when the black vote helped reelect Franklin Roosevelt to his second term.

Under what authority state or federal did Ogden operate his steamboats?

Aaron Ogden held a Fulton-Livingston license issued under the authority of the state of New York. New York had granted Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston a contract to issue permits for steamboat travel in New York waterways. Fulton and Livingston often seized boats operating without license in their territory.Thomas Gibbons held a license issued under the authority of Congress, pursuant to the Federal Licensing Act of 1793, specifically, "An act enrolling and licensing ships and vessels to be employed in the coasting trade and fisheries, and for regulating the same," under the authority of the Interstate Commerce Clause (Section I, Article 8, Clause 3). Gibbons either refused to purchase or was denied a Fulton-Livingston license, which prevented his company from carrying passengers between Elizabethtown, NJ, and New York City.Ogden successfully sued Gibbons in The Court of Chancery of NY for an injunction against entering Hudson bay and landing in New York City, giving Ogden a monopoly over the steamship business between New York and New Jersey. Gibbons appealed to the Supreme Court, which nullified the New York law as unconstitutional.Case Citation:Gibbons v. Ogden, 22 US 1 (1824)

The Democrats did not have majorities in the House and Senate for very long-- about twenty-two months total. But by November 2010, when the mid-term elections took place, the House changed control to the Republicans. And the Democrats still maintained a slim majority in the Senate.

What do republicans want for the economy?

Republicans want as little interference fromthe Government as is possible to allow the largest number of people to be free to become wealthy or self sufficient. They would prefer the lowest possible taxation on the average American and the most freedoms to do as you wish. Basically, they want to be fre to do what they can to provide for them selves and their families. Democrats want to be wet nursed and the ability to feed from the trough of those that work. They would prefer cradle to grave babysitting for themselves. They believe the roll of government is provide for anything they don't wish to work for and to protect them from themselves. Bottom line is that Republicans believe you can do it and Democrats believe you are too stupid to do anything. I believe that if anyone were to think through the issue, they could not be a Democrat under the current beliefs system today. Democrats were not always like this, nor were Republicans. This is a current issue.
