Impeachment of a federal officer means to stand trial in the U.S. Senate. A majority vote of 2/3 will result to a conviction, and if found guilty, the officer is removed from his position and possibly face criminal charges.

Impeachment, which is an action of the House of Representatives, is somewhat analogous to a Grand Jury hearing, where members of the house bring charges, called "articles of impeachment," and determine whether there is enough evidence supporting those charges to warrant a trial. If enough members of the House vote for impeachment, the action proceeds to trial in the Senate.

Impeachment, itself, does not remove the individual from office; it simply authorizes the Senate to conduct a trial to decide whether the defendant is guilty of the articles charged. If found guilty in the Senate, the impeached person is removed from public office.

Neither an impeachment nor a senate trial carry any civil or criminal penalties; they are simply procedures for removing government officials from office.

In the United States impeaching a public official means that a trial of that official has been set. The impeachment process acts like a US Grand jury. The jury does not try the person, it only says this person should be tried. This is the principle of impeachment.

This process is relevant to the members of the US Congress, the executive branch and all Federal judges.

In the US States, there is a similar process for State Officials carried out by their legislatures.

Other nations such as the Philippines, the United Kingdom also have impeachment processes. Each nation's process may have its own technical procedures, however, the principle remains the same as in the United States.

Impeach means to accuse them of something. Many people think the impeach means they are kicked out of office, but impeach really means to accuse.
