What does the preamble do to the constitution?

The Preamble does nothing. The Articles of the Constitution set up the framework of the US government and its relations to the states and they are the supreme law of the land as amended from time to time. The Preamble has no such effect, because it is merely an introductory paragraph. At best it can be looked to as a source of guidance in interpreting the Articles of the Constitution, but that is it.

The preamble is the first paragraph of the constitution. This is the preamble:

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Without the preamble, the constitution wouldn't have a begining. Kind of like a hook in a story for english. Without it, the Constitution would be harder to understand because it jumped right into the agreement.
