One of the many jobs the president has is the Head of State. He/She acts as a symbol for the United States and represents America on special occasions. For example, it is considered an honor to shake the president's hand. Also, he may hand out special awards to kids who win college scholarships or he may congradulate astronauts on their trip to space.

The US President, subject to the approval of the Senate, appoints the ambassadors to all of the countries and they are subject to his recall. The president also appoints the Secretary of State who reports to him. He sets the tone for US foreign policy and has a considerable amount of foreign aid funds at his discretion to give out. He meets with foreign heads of state, entertains them if they come to Washington and may attend summit meeting with them elsewhere. He can negotiate treaties and other international accords.

The White House is the official place where the President lives with his family. Since his office is also there, it's his official workplace.
