There are two answers to this question - theoretical and practical.
In theory, the President has no responsibility to a political party. he/she is elected to represent the entire population of the country, not just those within his or her party. Therefore, the responsibility of the president is to do what is in the best interest of the majority of the citizens even if his party is not in agreement.
In reality, however, the responsibility (primary political goal) of the president, is to further the party platform and help ensure the election or re-election of members of his or her political party. Since he ran on the party's platform he has the moral
responsibility of trying to fulfill his campaign promises. Furthering the party platform can be done by the president in several ways, such in nominating judges with specific opinions to vacant federal court benches (like the Supreme Court and the various District Courts), the power to veto legislation, guide the passage of party-friendly legislation, and so on. He also has some obligation to the people who funded his campaign and worked to elect him .

Fillmore was a Whig. He was the last of four Whig presidents.
Bill Clinton, a Democratic President, nominated Justice Breyer in 1994. US Supreme Court justices are nominated by Presidents, not by political parties (although the President belongs to a political party).
