To begin the process of impeaching the President, a charge of misconduct is filed against the president by the House of Representatives. A majority vote must pass the House of Representatives for the process to be started. After the charges are filed, the Senate votes. Two-thirds of the senators must vote for conviction. The president may be removed from office and never allowed to hold a government position again if he is found guilty.

The broad outline is:

  • The House votes on articles of impeachment. If they pass, the President is "impeached"
  • The Senate hears evidence regarding the President's crimes. During this time, the Senate is presided over by the Chief Justice of the United States.
  • The Senate votes. Two-thirds of the Senators must vote to remove the President from office for him to be removed.
