What did Alexis de Tocqueville do?

His full name was Alexis -Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville, born on July 29, 1805 and died on April 16, 1859. He was a French political thinker and historian best known for his writings ofDemocracy in America which was printed in two volumes in 1835 and 1840 and The Old Regime and the Revolution in 1856. He wrote about the effects of rising equality of social conditions on the individual and the state in western societies. His book Democracy in America was published after he went to the United States. He is considered a representative of classical liberal political tradition, and was quite active in French politics. He toured the French colony of Algeria and came to criticize France's model of colonization, preferring Britain's policy of Indirect rule He went to America to study American politics, he wrote about his travels through the United States when the market revolution, Western Expansion and Jacksonian Democracy were in the political mainstream. He would see that democracy was a balance of liberty and equality which bound Americans to an idea larger than the average mans selfish desires making it a self - conscious political society and civil society that was exactly dependent on the state.
