President Richard Nixon was born in a kit home in Yorba Linda, CA. The house was built in 1912 and was not from Sears. Today the house is on the grounds of the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace.
Allowed families to become consumers
Sears didn't use the mail, but the railroads for their orders. In the 1800's a watch salesman named Sears came up with an idea to sell items by catalog. He opened a wherehouse in Chicago because that was the rail hub for east/west bound trains. His catalog carried everything from dolls to kit houses. Everyone had two things in their homes. A bible and a Sears catalog until JC Pennies thought Sears had a good idea and produced their own catalog. It wasn't until the 1900's that a Sears store opened.
The company was formed by CBS, IBM and Sears Roebuck and Company. The company was headed by Theodore Papes until 1992.
Companies like Sears capitalized on the newly established federal mail service by using it to reach a broader customer base, especially in rural areas where traditional retail stores were scarce. They distributed catalogs, allowing customers to browse and order products from home, which revolutionized shopping. This direct-to-consumer approach not only increased their sales but also established a new retail model that relied on efficient mail delivery for fulfillment. Ultimately, the federal mail service enabled Sears to expand its market presence significantly.
Some stores do, check out your stores policy. Walmart does, as does Kmart, Sears, and Toys R Us. Oh, and Best Buy does as well.
