Franklin's father decided that Ben didn't need much school so he pulled him out of school at about 7-8 years old and apprenticed him to learn candle making. His father was so intent on his not learning Ben had to hide his books or his father would take them away and burn them. When he was 17 he signed a 7 year apprenticeship with his brother as a printer. Soon after his brother was arrested for printing seditious letters about the British and went to jail. Ben wrote the paper and ran the business while his brother was away, but when he returned he forced him to sign another 7 year contract for a new apprenticeship. At this point Ben ran away and started his life.
