Harriet Tubman, the famous Union spy, abolitionist, and "conductor" for the Underground Railroad, was born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland. As such, her "job" as a child was simply to do anything and everything that her master ordered her to do.

When she was very young, she was assigned domestic chores, such as acting as a nursemaid to the baby of a white woman named "Miss Susan". If the sleeping child awoke and started crying, Tubman was whipped as punishment. As she grew older and stronger, she was ordered to hard labor in the fields and forests, which included hauling timber, driving cattle, and tilling the crops. She remained that way until she was able to make her escape.
