General George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army of the United Colonies in June 1775. He had an excellent character. He was committed to civilian control of the military.
George Washington's greatest effect on the world was when he resigned his commission at the end of the war rather than capitalizing on his popularity to gain political power, even though many were calling for him to be crowned King of America.
