In 1829, the United States included the following 24 states:

  • Maine*
  • New Hampshire
  • Vermont
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Connecticut
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Virginia*
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Alabama
  • Mississippi
  • Louisiana
  • Tennessee
  • Kentucky
  • Ohio
  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Missouri*

* In 1829, the borders of the states of Maine, Virginia and Missouri were not the same as they are today. The position of the northern border of Maine was still being disputed with the British Colony of New Brunswick. The current State of West Virginia was still part of Virginia, and the area around Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia was still part of the District of Columbia. The northwest border of Missouri was a right angle. That border wasn't extended west to the Missouri River until 1837.

At that time, the United States also owned the organized, incorporated territories of Michigan, Arkansas and Florida. Most of what had been the Louisiana Purchase from France was still unorganized, incorporated territory, and the United States was sharing Oregon Country, which extended from Mexico to Russian America, with Great Britain.
