Devices similar to the Guillotine had been around since the 1200's but the modern guillotine was designed as a result of a French law passed in 1791 that decreed that henceforth all capital punishment should be done by decapitation. Before that some very barbarous techniques were used. Because the state executioner said that decapitation with the sword was unreliable and messy they decided to have another look at the idea proposed some years previously by Dr Guillotin involving the falling blade. The results were so successful that in 1792 it was decided that the gillotine would be the official form of capital punishment in France. Thousands were publically guillotined during the French Revolution. The last time it was used was in 1977. France has since banned capital punishment.
