The source copy used for the initial printing of the Declaration of Independence that was read to the public was lost. The famous signed version has been preserved and is on display at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

I am not sure when but what I know is that the original is not in Washington D.C. and it is not at the National Archives. The Congress did not sign this document on July 4th,1776 it was created after July,19 and was signed by most Congressional delegates on August 2nd.
