In 1836, a small group of Texans was defeated by Mexican General Santa Anna. Remembering how badly the Texans had been defeated at the Alamo, on April 21, 1836, Houston’s army won a quick battle against the Mexican forces at San Jacinto and gained independence for Texas.
The population group of Texans that largely did not support slavery and the Confederacy were the German immigrants, particularly those in the Hill Country region. Many German Texans were opposed to slavery on moral and economic grounds and instead favored the Union during the Civil War. Their anti-slavery sentiment led to a significant number of them joining Union forces or resisting Confederate policies. This opposition often resulted in social and political tensions within Texas during that period.
Some Mexican-Americans became involved in politics because of their interest in immigration policies. A lot of Mexican-Americans also became more interested when Barack Obama announced he was running for president because it was easy for them to relate to someone from a minority group.
