In the 1790's Alexander Hamilton and the Federalist Party favored a strong centralized federal government and wanted the individual states to ratify the constitution, even though it meant the states had to give up some of their powers to the federal government.
The Whig party saw Andrew Jackson as a dangerous man. They felt he had an opposition to social, economic, and moral modernization, which was what they believed in. They pledged themselves to Congressional supremacy. They felt that congress represented the will of the people, not the president.
Members of the Democratic-Republican Party believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution. They were opposed to the Federalists, who generally believed in a stronger national government.
